An American Tune

Opening November 4, 2018 in The Gallery @ OAP in Port Hadlock, “An American Tune” featuring OAP’s Artist in Residence Gary Nisbet. Nisbet will present a series title “The Presidents of the United States of America”. This series is over two years in the making and he says the opening date of November 4, two days before the midterm elections is not a coincidence.

Nisbet explains how and why he took on this daunting project. “Shortly before the election of November 2016, I was stopped short in my resolve by a conversation with my son, Cooper, who reminded me that his own interest in American civics was nurtured by a dad who had followed every election closely since Cooper could remember. He reminded me that I was the one who had taught him about the personalities and politics of the candidates, about the Electoral College, about the issues at stake in each election and, finally, about the need to stay involved.

It was this humbling lesson from my own son that got me interested in the Presidency as a cultural thread in our lives, and which inspired the idea of creating portraits of all 45 United States Presidents. In my presidential portraits, I combine paint and collage techniques to play off the exalted tradition of presidential portraiture in general. Surfaces can be recycled board, fabric, canvas or even cardboard.”

Also showing in the Gallery are a series of work by two photographers, Don Milage of Seattle and Michelle de Lancey of California.

Don Milgate calls his current body of work “Studio Duotones”. Don’s major influences include Irving Penn, Richard Avedon, Arnold Newman, Bert Stern along with great many more. His enthusiastic curiosity to experiment his way towards photographic perfection and his love for classic black and white photos shapes his style. Shapes and shadows capture his eye, sometimes even more than the subject. He often sees the photograph before he shoots and sometimes the image can be so elusive, that his mind is filled with photos uncaptured.

Michelle de Lancey calls her current body of work “Homestead”. de Lancey has spent the last decade visually chronicling large segments of the jack rabbit homesteads of the Mojave Desert. Her powerful photographs capture the historical and architectural significance of the Morongo Basin in particular. Amidst deterioration, her vivid images capture and celebrate the sense of individuality that define the interplay of structure and stark environment, both significant aspects of American history, culture and identity.

“An American Tune” exhibit will be on display in The Gallery at OAP from November 4, 2018 through December 31, 2018.
