Making art ‘From the Ground up’
Join the Old Alcohol Plant’s Artist in Residence, Gary Nisbet, in this unique 3-day workshop he calls, “Making Art From the Ground up,” art inspired by the garden and gardening. Work on paintings and collage which featured forms drawn from the domestic realm of garden and table.
The workshop will take place in the Old Alcohol Plant’s indoor/outdoor garden studio just adjacent to the Inn’s sustainable gardens.
Learn to collect and create your own visual compost from personal ephemera or ‘growing medium’ for new work.
Students will spend time in the Garden talking with the master gardeners, Patrick and Kira about the cycles of the garden and their gardening process. They will find inspiration in the garden which will be at the apex of its growth season, by the variety of birds who visit the garden and by Port Townsend cove which makes a lovely backdrop for the garden. A guest artist will join Gary during one of the days to discuss how the garden has inspired their work during their career.
Students will work from 12:00 noon until 5:00 pm in the garden studio. After getting acquainted, students will meet our Master Gardeners and take a tour of the OAP’s sustainable garden. We will then work on quick sketches in our journals. In the afternoon, students will work with paint and collage and we will start to build the ground for our work. After class, enjoy a welcome dinner on OAP’s Spirits Bar & Grill’s restaurant patio. We will reflect on our first day while overlooking the beautiful garden and bay and enjoying a delicious meal lovingly grown and prepared for by our Master Gardeners and Chef.
Day two’s class will run from 10:00 a.m – 3:00. Students will begin by spending sometime looking at the garden for inspiration and then go back to working on pieces that were started the first day and discuss composition and layering. Students will enjoy a box lunch on the lawn, overlooking the garden and bay. After class students will have the opportunity to spend the rest of the afternoon exploring the beautiful sights of the local area.
Class will run from 9:00a.m. until 12 noon and will include a continental breakfast. Students will have the opportunity to work more on pieces started the first two days or begin new work. The workshop will end with an insightful conversation about the experience.
